About Tany

Born in Grand Falls, New Brunswick, Tany moved to Fort McMurray in 1977. His father immigrated from the Philippines and became a doctor; his mother worked as a nurse. Tany learned early that perseverance and entrepreneurial spirit are the foundations of success.

Before politics, Tany served as a paramedic firefighter and became Assistant Deputy Chief of Operations for EMS in Wood Buffalo. During the 2016 Fort McMurray wildfires, he was recognized as a hero for helping evacuees. This experience shaped his understanding of community resilience.

First elected in 2015 and re-elected twice, Tany serves as Parliamentary Secretary for Small Business and Northern Development and Deputy Government Whip. He fights every day to secure your economic future by championing entrepreneurs and creating conditions for businesses to thrive.

πŸ™οΈ The Heart of Wood Buffalo

Fort McMurray, located at the confluence of the Athabasca and Clearwater Rivers, is the urban hub of the region. Originally a trading post and gathering place for Cree, Dene, and MΓ©tis peoples, its history is as layered as its geography β€” from fur trade routes to oil sands development.

Population & Culture

Today, Fort McMurray is home to over 70,000 residents and reflects a blend of cultures, languages, and histories. Indigenous presence remains vital, with local Cree, Dene, and MΓ©tis communities continuing to shape the city's identity, advocacy, and growth.

Nature & Local Features

Despite being a city, Fort McMurray is still surrounded by nature β€” trails, boreal forests, rivers, and northern lights. The blend of urban energy and northern stillness is what makes it unique.

Community Life & Events

From powwows to cultural exhibitions, youth programming to interfaith gatherings β€” Fort McMurray hosts events that bridge tradition and diversity. Heritage Village, McMurray MΓ©tis Office, and MacDonald Island are popular places for cultural celebration and recreation.
